"I do everything simple," Alex Davis told me as we started our annual tasting in his utilitarian winery. "I'm involved with everything that goes on here: plowing, planting, cutting, shooting wild pigs, crushing, racking, bottling, fork-lifting; so I like things to be efficient." He described 2009 as a vintage "that pretty much let you do what you wanted, but that storm in October must have humbled some people who think that it's cool to leave grapes on the vines until they're raisins." He said that "harvesting started to be viable around here in early to mid-September and stayed great for another month. If you screwed up harvesting in '09 you've only got yourself to blame."
