Alex Davis admitted that yields in 2006 were on the high side at his estate, adding that he's "not really an extraction, weight and thickness kind of guy anyway, so it's not a huge issue for me." He admitted that if you prize oomph over finesse, 2006 will be spotty. "The guys who are after power and like to make monster truck wines probably aren't too psyched," he told me. Incidentally, there's a fleet of biodiesel-fueled vehicles here, and all of the estate's vines are farmed organically. The George's Hill site is worked biodynamically, and certified as such. But the Davis family is notoriously iconoclastic and Alex is wary of getting too cozy with organizations that might threaten to limit "the flexibility that we have to have with something as complicated and unpredictable as growing grapes in a cool spot." He went on: "My dad's a pretty independent guy, and as I get older I've realized that it's rubbed off on me pretty hard."
