Podere La Berta is managed by Giovanni Poggiali (also of Felsina in Chianti Classico), who purchased the property because of his desire to expose the world to the wines of his family’s home, Romagna. It bears mentioning that Felsina and La Berta share the same winemaking team. The estate oversees 15 hectares of vineyards in the Lamone Valley of Brisighella, a rugged landscape heavily influenced by the Apennines and surrounding forests. Sangiovese finds a more serious expression in the high-elevation, terraced vineyards. The climate here is continental, and the soils are a mix of clay and sandstone. Giovanni Poggiali keeps a very open mind to the region's future, advocating for fellow producers while continuing to explore the best means to refine the Sangiovese of Romagna. It remains to be seen if Podere La Berta will one day gain the same worldwide recognition as Felsina, but the quality of the wines suggests there is potential. Podere La Berta is making one of the top dessert wines in Italy today. The Albana Passito is a bucket-list experience for fans of sweet wines.
