I was first impressed by and introduced to Podere La Berta only last year. Giovanni Poggiali of Felsina, in Chianti Classico, purchased Podere La Berta because of his family's desire to expose the world to the uniqueness of the region - Ravenna is the city where the family is from originally. However, I can’t help but think that it was very much the potential they saw in this vineyards. Podere La Berta is located in the foothills of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, overlooking the Lamone Valley. The winery follows strict organic practices throughout their fifteen hectares of vineyards, working soils that are a mix of blue clays and yellow sandstone with marine deposits found throughout. These hilly parcels overlook the Mediterranean sea in the distance, yet they are more heavily influenced by the Apennines and surrounding forests. The winery focuses on the traditional varieties of the territory: Sangiovese, Albana, Trebbiano and Pagadebit. They produce two distinct Cru wines from Sangiovese, the Riserva Olmatello and the Solano, as well as a Sangiovese Superiore from a mix of locations that represents amazing value. While the white varieties have yet to impress me as a whole, the Albana Passito easily ranks among some of the top dessert wines I’ve tasted this year. What’s more, the winemaking team is shared between the Felsina location and La Berta, along with consultant enologist Franco Bernabei.
