Once again, Pax Mahle presented a compelling array of wines that set a very high standard for excellence in the United States. There are many highlights in this range, including two new Gamays that are both terrific. This year Mahle releases his 2016 single-vineyard Syrahs, which are fascinating to taste with the extraordinary 2016 Sonoma-Hillsides in mind. The vineyard designates were bottled at the same time as the Sonoma-Hillsides, but were aged in neutral oak, as opposed to cement. There is something about the blend and the elevage of the 2016 Sonoma-Hillsides that remains pure magic. As always, the emphasis is on picking for energy. The flagship Syrahs are all done with 100% stems, while oak, when it is used, is neutral.
