Pax Mahle waxed enthusiastic about his 2005 crop, which featured ripe fruit at the lowest grape sugars he has experienced to date:a couple of wines were actually under 13%. The 2004s, on the other hand, are the highest-octane wines Mahle has made, with a few showing distinctly roasted ripeness. Due to a sizable percentage of dehydrated grapes, said Mahle, the 2004s were hard to ferment. A few of these wines struck me as almost overconcentrated at the expense of some of their drinkability; time will tell how much backbone and flavor intensity lie beneath their considerable baby fat.
