The Tommasi family of the Veneto has been hard at work acquiring estates throughout Italy. Since 2016 Tommasi has become the largest shareholder in the nearly 100-year-old Paternoster winery. Paternoster, which began production in 1925, is deeply tied to the early successes of Basilicata. But it was the next generation, in the form of Giuseppe Paternoster, who brought an education in enology, modern winemaking techniques, a focus on single-vineyard wines and terroir, as well as marketing to the region. Under his watch, the estate holdings grew to over twenty hectares around the heart of Vulture, the town of Barile. The vineyards are farmed organically, rise up as high as 643 meters in elevation, all growing in a kaleidoscope of volcanic soils. Up to this point the changes the Tommasi family have made have been focused more on the side of distribution and a sharing of resources. Fabio Mecca remains the longtime oenologist at Paternoster, just as the practices in the vineyards and cellars are unchanged.
