The Pala winery and vineyards are located in the south-eastern corner of Sardinia. While the operation was founded as far back as the 1950s, it was focused more on bulk production - that is, until Mario Pala took control of the winery. Pala had his sights set on increasing quality through better farming practices, modernization and a focus on the individual terroirs spread throughout their vineyards. Pala currently oversees 110 hectares, primarily on rolling hills overlooking the Gulf of Cagliari, from 11 meters near the shore to 250 meters further inland. This includes four hectares of up to 128 years old Bovale, all ungrafted vines growing in soils of pure white sand. "All practices here are organic," CEO Fabio Angius explained. "It's easy to do it here in Sardinia thanks to the weather.” What he’s referring to are the warm days and cool nights that are further balanced by constant breezes blowing in from the nearby sea. The top-level wines of Pala were an immediate standout in my tastings; I only wish they could have packed a bit more character into their entry-level range. These are wines that are primarily focused on fruit, with only their location and vine age to account for the vivid colors, aromas and flavors.
