Ovid is one of the most exciting new entrants in the world of premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since their first commercially released vintage in 2005, Ovid has shown what is possible on Pritchard Hill’s Long Ranch Road sector, a stretch of vineyards that starts at Aril, on the lower slopes of the mountain, and winds its way past several top estates, including Brand, Montagna, Martinez, Nine Suns and Colgin, before reaching Ovid. This vertical provides a rare opportunity to track the estate’s evolution from the first release to the present.

Ovid bottled their 2014s a bit later than normal. As a result, the wines were still in bottle shock at the time of my fall tastings. I will report back on the 2014s as soon as the wines have had a chance to recover from bottling. I did have a chance to revisit two of the estate's 2013s. Those wines are just as compelling as they have been. Earlier in the year I tasted through a complete vertical of the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. A complete report on that tasting will follow shortly. Attention to detail and a total commitment to excellence are two of the cornerstones of this impeccable estate on Pritchard Hill run by owners Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, and their team headed by Managing Partner Janet Pagano and Winemaker Austin Peterson.

This is a remarkable set of wines from Ovid. The 2012s have grown in bottle considerably since I last tasted them about a year ago. Winemaker Austin Peterson describes 2012 as a more relaxed and leisurely growing season than either 2013 and 2014, both of which were early. Ovid is always among the last estates to blend, so I tasted the 2014s in separate lots from barrel, including most of the core lots that are the backbones for the flagship wines. Today, 2014 is shaping up be another terrific vintage at Ovid.
