Winemaker Jeff Owens is doing terrific work at Odette. Personally, I think the wines (the Reserve in particular) could be less bombastic and truer to Stags Leap, but at the same time, there is probably a desire to keep the Plumpjack group's three estates - Plumpjack, Odette and Cade - stylistically aligned, which does make sense. Still, my distinct impression is that the full potential of this site remains untapped. Odette is a very young winery, so there is every reason to think these Cabernets will only improve as Owens gets to know the site better.

These first releases from Odette and winemaker Jeff Owens are gorgeous. Odette is the Stags' Leap property of the Plumpjack group. The property encompasses 45 acres, all in Stags Leap. Odette's Estate Cabernet is made from various parcels, while the Reserve emerges from Odette's oldest vines, which were planted in 1979 and 1980 and account for about 6-7% of the holdings. Most of the early Odette Cabernets have included significant percentages of blenders, the 2013 Reserve being the exception. It will be interesting to see how things develop here in coming years. Odette is certainly off to a very strong start.
