It was a bottle of 1977 Mastroberardino that forever sealed my faith in what Taurasi was capable of, and as fate would have it, I was able to taste the vintage once again while writing this report, and it is still alive and kicking. The Mastroberardino winery, located in the province of Avellino and in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, was founded in 1878. Since the beginning, the focus was, and remains to this day, the native varieties of Campania. The winery saw its golden age during the 1960s and '70s, with access to the region's greatest vineyard sources. Unfortunately, through a division of family, vineyards, and lack of direction, Mastroberardino suffered through a downturn in quality that lasted over a decade. However, those dark times are officially behind us now. Over the last twenty years, we’ve witnessed a renewed energy and surge in quality from Mastroberardino, once again placing them among the region's elite producers. In fact, having recently spoken with Piero Mastroberardino, he revealed that they are now looking back to the wines and styles of the '60s and '70s with a new range that will be released in the coming years. This news alone should be enough to get collectors excited.
