It was great to catch up with Alan Manley following what was a very difficult year for him personally. Manley makes a single Barolo from vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, Monforte and Serralunga that are co-fermented, in a style similar to what he saw for years at Bartolo Mascarello, where I first met him many years ago. The wines are vinified in cement and aged in cask. At times, I feel the Barolo might benefit from less time in oak, as the style here is very much one that prizes finesse above all else.
