"Pinot grigio still drives the ship" of this roughly 40,000-case winery, accounting for about 80% of total output, says winemaker Mike Drash, who went to Italy in 2006 to further his studies of this variety. Although Luna makes its red wines from purchased fruit, its pinot grigio comes from 40 acres of owned vineyards around the winery just north of the town of Napa on the Silverado Trail. The white wines here remain remarkably affordable. Drash is a fan of the 2005 vintage for reds, as the fruit ripened slowly, with no raisining. He concluded: "It's a once-in-ten-years vintage in terms of its ageability."
