Winemaker Mike Drash told me, almost apologetically, that he's not quite as hands-off as previous winemakers Abe Schoener and John Kongsgaard had been. Among other things, he has better temperature control in the winery and he is more careful about keeping the barrels topped up and more willing to use SO2 additions to keep brett levels down. In 2003, he even did a bit of filtration. But the Luna wines made by Drash still display more personality than the overwhelming majority of examples from Napa Valley-and offer excellent value. In recent years, Luna has slashed red wine production:sangiovese was cut from 14,000 cases in 2002 to 4,000 cases in 2004, while merlot went from 8,000 cases in 2001 to just 2,000 in 2004. But the quality of Luna's vineyard sources is higher today than ever before.

Mike Drash, ex-assistant winemaker at Far Niente, began working at Luna in August of 2003 and took over as winemaker in April of 2004 when Abe Shoener left to concentrate on his own wine venture. With the influence of Drash, the vinification of the 2003 reds featured warmer fermentations, with more extraction and more frequent rackings than have been done in the past here.
