Bob Levy and Martha McClellan are best known for their day jobs, he as Director of Winegrowing at Harlan Estate and Bond, and she as one of the most in-demand consultants in Napa Valley, but Levy and McClellan also make a small amount of wine from their property in Calistoga. Meticulous farming and small-lot vinification, always in 100% new French oak barriques, are the norm in handmade, artisan Cabernets. The wines are rich, lush expressions of this rugged hillside site.

These are the finest wines I have tasted from Bob Levy and Martha McClellan, two Napa Valley veterans who first gained exposure at Harlan, where Levy is Director of Winegrowing. Levy and McClellan's small hillside property is located on Franz Valley School Road, in Calistoga. McClellan favors barrel fermentation and long macerations lasting 55-60 days, which in the past has left the wines with traces of astringent tannins that in the last few years have disappeared. Levy credits that to the increasing age of the vines. Whatever the reason, these wines are superb. All of the Levy & McClellan wines are labeled as Red Wines although in practical terms, they are all 80-85% Cabernets. I should add that the Ampersand, the second wine, is especially strong in 2012.

These are three beautiful wines from Bob Levy and Martha McClellan's small six acre vineyard on Franz Valley School Road. McClellan favors barrel fermentations, long aging by Napa Valley standards and minimal racking. At their best, these wines exhibit extraordinary purity, texture and intensity. Personally, I am not sure much is gained through extended time in barrel other than the wines lose a measure of freshness. Some sites are better suited to that style, but I often find more energy, delineation and focus in these wines when they are in barrel. The flagship Red Wine is typically 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest classic Bordeaux varieties.

Bob Levy and Martha McClellan planted their six acre hillside parcel on Franz Valley School Road in 1999 using very tight row spacing. The flaghsip Red Wine from this late-ripening site is typically 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with dollops of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The wines are made in a ripe, opulent style, with considerable volume, much of which comes from fermentation in barrel. The wines have always been flashy and loaded with fruit, but with the 2012 I noted a mineral dimension that hasn't been present before, and that adds considerable complexity.
