Marc Beyer was one of a few Alsace proprietors who insisted on showing me some examples from the 2003 vintage, and a couple of these wines were impressive indeed, at a level of quality transcending the vintage. Beyer describes the 2004s here as "average to good, in a classic style." He also poured the estate's supernal 1998 Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer SGN Quintessence bottlings at the end of our tasting; I hope that civilians are able to enjoy these extraordinary nectars-which I once again rated 95 and 97 points, respectively-and that they are not all reserved for visiting wine writers.
