Gianni Brunelli was a Renaissance man who excelled at most everything he did. Not only did he launch Siena’s Osteria Le Logge, the city’s best restaurant, but in 1987 he took over the Le Chiuse di Sotto estate located in the cooler northern section of the Montalcino production zone. At the time there were only two hectares of vineyards (situated at roughly 200 meters above sea level): the estate actually still farms a small plot of Sangiovese vines planted by Gianni’s father Dino in 1947. Brunelli expanded his vineyard holdings over time, acquiring the Podernovone estate and its 4.5 hectares of mostly Sangiovese (planted 350 meters above sea level). Farming vineyards in two very different areas of Montalcino - breezy and fresh but at times quite rainy conditions characterize the area where Le Chiuse di Sotto is located, while Podernovone is warmer but well ventilated - allows this estate to make complex and well-balanced wines in most vintages. Gianni’s wife Laura now oversees the estate (Gianni having passed away in 2008) and is helped by one of Montalcino’s great wine experts, Paolo Vagaggini, her winemaker. The vineyards are followed directly by Laura Brunelli and a consultant viticulturist. I find this estate’s Brunellos to be irresistible and among the purest, sleekest wines of Montalcino in most vintages.

Over the last few years, Le Chiuse di Sotto has really dialed up quality and must now be considered one of the leading estates in Montalcino, which is in a way bittersweet, as Gianni Brunelli passed away in 2008, before he could see firsthand the result of his early work. The estate is composed to two sets of vineyards; the first property, Le Chiuse di Sotto lies on the northern side of Montalcino, but in 2001, Brunelli bought a second property in Podernovone, in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, that is now the main source of fruit in these wines, and is also the site of a new cellar that is under construction. The wines are aged in Slavonian oak ranging from 10-30HL in size. As always, the these Brunellos emphasize fruit and texture along with a classic sense of structure.
