Brother and sister team Laura and Adriano Brunelli should be very proud of their recent accomplishments. The first thing that stands out as I put my thoughts together regarding my tastings and interviews with them is the 2015 Riserva, which ended up being the top 2015 Riserva from my tastings to date. This bottling is made primarily from their holdings in the south, from the Olmo vineyard at Podernovone, but it is balanced out and given lift from fruit sourced from Le Chiuse di Sotto in the north - think of it as a seasoning. The 2015 spent nearly three and a half years in a combination of twenty-five to thirty-hectoliter barrels before being bottled, and it is a credit to the vintage and the Riserva category. That said, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is no slouch, coming in as one of the highlights of the vintage, and with the potential to possibly score even higher as it blossoms over time. The fact is that Brunelli continues to wow, bringing balance and purity to the table by blending north and south. These are wines that no lover of Montalcino should be without.
