As was the case at many addresses this year, I found some of Peter Geiben's rieslings spot-on in clarity and expressiveness, while a few of them exhibited dull earthy notes. The latter I took to be the consequence of low levels of less than positive botrytis in later-harvested circumstances. Sometimes, too, in Geiben's super-concentrated sweet wines, there was a sharpness of acidity and an astringency that I doubted would integrate. But, based on the successes here in 2002, this is a vintage at Karlsmuhle that lovers of Ruwer riesling will not want to miss.
