Céline and Isabelle Meyer showed their 2022 vintage during my visit, remembering the dry and hot 2022 season. “I think I only sprayed five times in 2022, and I stopped it completely in July. It was not necessary,” Céline Meyer says. “But I made a lot of decoctions of chamomile and yarrow at five in the morning while it was still cool, to bring freshness [into the vineyard], and to support the vines in this dryness, to bring serenity. We were limited in what we could do, but I tried this,” she explains and admits that it helped her as much as the vines, especially those on the plain. They did this every week during the heat. As luck would have it, some rain in Turckheim in late August helped the Brand Grand Cru to continue metabolizing and ripening the fruit. It helped “the vines to breathe again,” Meyer says. The wines are rounder and even more textured than usual but handled with creativity and intuition. The Brand Grand Cru Riesling is a standout.
