"Some of our colleagues expressed concern that such low acids would not balance the sweetness, but we didn't see that as a problem," says Katarina Prum. She notes that while acids were even lower than in '97 or '89, they are no different than in '59, a vintage universally considered one of the greats. Given the outstanding track record here, one might be inclined to cellar and follow a few of the '99s noted below. There are also gold-capsuled Auslesen, a Beerenauslese and an Eiswein (the latter from Bernkasteler Johannisbrunchen) this year, but I have not yet tasted those.
