Manfred Prum's collection is extraordinarily successful, epitomizing the combination of rich flavors and texture with clarity, brightness and airy elegance that characterizes 1998 at its best. He described the ripening season as excellent thanks particularly to an early flowering and balmy summer nights. Most of the wines had just been bottled the week I visited, but they didn't suffer . . . nor did I. Several Eisweins were harvested, in Wehlener Sonnenuhr and in Bernkasteler Johannisbrunnchen, but these I did not taste.
