These are the first wines I have tasted from JCR Vineyard, a large, sprawling ranch of 1,000 acres (5.5 planted) just outside the Sta. Rita Hills. The vineyard was planted in 2008, mostly to Pinot Noir, with a half-acre dedicated to Chardonnay. Winemaker Alison Thompson's résumé includes stops at Sine Qua Non, Palmina, and, most recently, Samsara. Thompson favors long macerations lasting 25-30 days, with native yeasts, and relatively lengthy aging for her Pinots, all of which see a good bit of whole clusters in fermentation. JCR is without question an ambitious project. These wines suggest the future is very bright.
