Hugel is one of the grand old names in Alsace wine and most wine lovers immediately recognize the domain's characteristic orange labels. The Classic (simply labeled Hugel) and Tradition wines have historically been made in large part from bought grapes, but in recent years Hugel has greatly increased the percentage of estate-grown grapes in many of these wines. The Jubilée line represents the highest level of quality at Hugel: most of these wines are made with grapes grown in grand cru sites, although Hugel famously refuses to use grand cru names on their labels, thinking them to be of limited usefulness to consumers. Brothers Marc and Etienne Hugel run a tight, well-organized ship and nowadays their children are becoming more and more involved in the family business. No surprise here: as Hugel has been around since 1639, they clearly know a thing or two about passing the baton to the next generation. The 2012s struck me as very successful here.

Readers should seek out Hugel's Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles bottlings, as the house is a recognized master of these late-harvest sweet wines and often makes them in commercially significant quantities.
