Helmut Donnhoff's rieslings are seldom pompous. Like the man himself, they are—at least on the surface—serene, gentle and always perfectly balanced, with the latter word being the key to appreciating his style. Like the wines of Willi Schaefer from the Mosel, they only become provocative when you understand their language. Although D o nnhoff is no longer alone at the pinnacle of the Nahe, he is certainly the man who put this region on the map and the one so many collectors identify with it. Not only that, everything he touches turns to gold, from the dry Grosses Gewachs to the sublime eisweins. If you have never had the opportunity to taste his rieslings, seek out the 2010 Leistenberg Kabinett. If you don't like this, go directly to jail without passing go or collecting two hundred dollars. Also recommended2010 Riesling Trocken Tonschiefer (86), 2010 Kreuznacher Kalenberg Riesling Trocken (88), 2010 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Trocken (87), 2010 Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken (88).
