These are two superb wines from Helianthus, a wine made by Tom Futo and his team from purchased fruit. Helianthus is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine made with large amount of co-fermented lots and aged in a combination of 500-600 liter barrels, with some terra cotta as well. Both the 2016 and 2017 are terrific.

Helianthus, which is made by Tom Futo and his team, continues to improve. Winemaker Jason Exposto's experiments with larger format 600L Stockinger barrels and terra cotta have proven to work beautifully with the Helianthus Cabernet. It will be interesting to see where Helianthus goes under the direction of new winemaker Graham Wehmeier, but all the elements appear to be in place to ensure a bright future.
