In an ironic twist of fate Davide Rosso recently inherited 1.1 hectares in the mythical Vigna Rionda his family had once sold to their relatives, the Canales, nearly 50 years ago. Tommaso Canale was one of Piedmont's great characters. Canale and his father were known for their holdings in the most prestigious part of Vigna Rionda, the vineyard from which they sold fruit (some also say bulk wine) to Bruno Giacosa for his monumental Barolo Collina Rionda. Half of the land now belongs to Davide Rosso. Rosso's parcel runs the entire height of the slope from bottom to top. The bottom part of the parcel is being re-planted, but the top part of the vineyard, where some of the oldest Rionda vines remain, is still in production. Rosso plans to release a small amount (about 900 bottles) of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 Vigna Riondas with old Tommaso Canale label, but most of the wine that was in cask at the time of Canale's death has been sold in bulk. As for the rest of Davide Rosso's new releases, they should by no means be overlooked by the attention that is certain to fall on the Tommaso Canale Rionda, they merit plenty of attention on their own.
