Five years ago, I would have placed any bet on Florian Weingart to take the pole position on the Mittelrhein. Both a purist and a perfectionist, he is also a bit eccentric. After a new winery project was put on hold, there was talk of his selling the property. In any case, he has downsized his holdings to concentrate on his core vineyards and do everything himself. He does not want to be a winery manager and salesman but a grape farmer. With the low yields he had in 2013, he had little wine to sell anyway. However interesting some of his individual Rieslings are, the pieces do not yet add up to a puzzle. This is clearly an estate with the potential to compete at a higher level.
