Laurence Faller was in America at the time of my visit to Alsace, but I was in good hands with her sister Cathy, who showed me an extraordinary array of '98s and '97s, culminating in several of the estate mindboggling SGN bottlings. In a subsequent telephone conversation, Laurence told me that differences between the two vintages were more of style than of quality; the most important difference, she notes, was the influence of botrytis in '98.Particularly where the rot was of the noble persuasion, it gave gras to the wines and brought a fresh, ripe, subtle acidity that has resulted in harmonious wines.Yields were slightly lower in '98 than the previous year, as were grape sugars. In 1997, says Laurence, there was no worry about harvest rain, and there were 70% more sunshine hours in September than the 10-year average. The wines, she says, are characterized by pure fruit and supple textures. "We needed less sugar in the finished wines to get the balance right because there was lower acidity," she noted.(Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL)
