Domaine Montirius is one of France’s (hence the world’s) pioneering biodynamic producers. They have been producing some of the best wines in Gigondas, as well as Vacqueyras, for the past two decades. This current set of releases shows that they aren’t slowing down. There’s no oak in play here, just concrete, and the wines are made in as non-interventionist a manner as possible. I’m always struck by how fresh the Gigondas comes across even in hot years, and also by how the wines never really seem to close down. The 2017s are very close to the quality level of the outstanding 2016s and 2015s, which is saying something.
