Jean-Francois Michelot commented to me that the 2001 vintage is "very mineral in character and we utilized a good deal more stainless in our levage because it was easy to lose the freshness of the fruit and have it become overly buttery in character." He went on to note that "2001 is a good deal more exotic than 2000 and though it has the same fat, the acidity is less powerful yet somehow the wines seem to retain good balance." Michelot compares 1999 to 1979 and 2000 to a blend of 1989 and 1992; however, like many he had difficulty coming up with a good parallel for the 2001 vintage. The 2001s were bottled between July and September of 2002 and I tasted them in November. As an aside, I had a chance to revisit several of the Michelot 1999s and they remain every bit as good as they were when I tasted them at the Domaine in November of 2000. In particular, I call your attention to the '99 Genevrieres which is just a stunningly good example.
