Yves Gangloff’s strongest memory of the 2017 growing season was the heat that bore down on the region through the summer and, in some cases, caused grapes to get “super-ripe and even shrivel” in the warmest and most exposed vineyards. Thanks to the early harvest, which began in the second week of September, about two weeks earlier than 2016, proper pHs and acidities were attained, or maintained he said, “but it was a nervous time but the wines are turning out to have really good freshness and could be very classic in style.” Gangloff’s wines are usually extremely difficult to track down given his long-time, rabidly dedicated private customers, whose demands mean that allocations to importers around the world are spread extremely, even laughably (or miserably), thin. That said, Gangloff's 2017s are well worth the search, especially for readers looking for wines that show the more graceful side of the vintage.
