Jean-Michel is spending more time these days in Priorat working on his Trio Infernal project, and over the last few years, his sons, Alexis and Michael, have fully settled in on the day-to-day operations of their 12 hectares of vineyards and cellar just outside Ampuis. During my tasting with Alexis, he said he thinks that the 2014 reds “will have a lot of appeal for restaurants and people who like to drink wines young, for fruit and freshness” and compared them with 2012, “but the ‘14s will probably live a little longer because the tannins are stronger.” With the ageworthy 2013s and 2015s as bookends, he sees ’14 as a year to enjoy while keeping your hands off their younger and older siblings “because 2015 will be a truly great vintage, but not for another 10 years.”

With a much larger, brand-new space to work in, the Gerins will be able to “save a lot of time that used to be spent moving things around" and devote even more energy to their vineyards, Alexis Gerin told me in December. "The winemaking part has been running smoothly," he continued, but the relatively cramped space where they were working was less and less able to handle the amount of wine produced by the family's 12 hectares of vines.
