Jean-Michel Gerin is still involved with the family domaine but has been spending more time on his project in Priorat, as well as the excellent and always busy Bistrot de Serine (a restaurant in Ampuis where he is a partner) and its attached top-notch wine shop. Gerin’s sons, Michaël and Alexis, are now fully in charge of the day-to-day tasks in the vineyards and cellar, plus sales work around the globe. Under the sons’ watch, the wines here have begun to show more restraint, although they have in no way become shy. While new oak has been dialed back, it’s still present. However, that should not be a concern as the wines are meant to age for a long time. After more than my fair share of highly pleasurable experiences, I can vouch for the oak integration.

Alexis and Michael Gerin’s 2018s and 2019’s are rich and well-structured wines but “not as dark in style as 2017,” and they are also “deeper than 2016 and less strict than 2015.” Alexis said that they started harvesting in 2019 in the third week of September, “because letting the fruit hang longer meant a risk of super-ripeness and we also didn’t want the acids to drop.”
