Gerin told me he spent more time green-harvesting inx000D 2001 than doing the actual picking of the grapes, but the crop level was stillx000D full, as it had been the previous year. The 2001s are round wines with more flesh than the 2000s, adds Gerin, inx000D the style of 1997 and suitable for drinking on the early side. (The 2001 Landonne and Grandes Places struckx000D me as even more oaky than usual for unfinished wines at this address.) The 2000s, he notes, are more like the '98sx000D in style.

"Nineteen ninety-nine is one of the four best vintages of the century for our appellation, along with '61, '47 and '21," opines Jean-Michel Gerin; "but the key to making balanced wines in '99 was controlling yields." "But is 1999 typical Cote-Rotie?" I asked. "I don't know if it's typical," he replied, "but it's great, especially if the function of wine is to give pleasure." The '99s, Gerin adds, are built for long aging. In comparison, he says, the 2000s are almost ready to drink, like the '98s.
