One feels a sense of moving forward at this Meursault address as Henri Gaunoux, when not unleashing his “inner Bocuse” in the kitchen, is making wines with increasing freshness and terroir expression. “There was a lot of frost, but the wines are balanced with good aging potential. We lost 80% of the crop. The reds are a bit lighter. It’s a ‘millésime Bourguignon’ like one from the 1980s: a little lighter, gourmand in style. We started the picking on 18 September, and we will bottle next year, maybe a little earlier. The Premier Crus usually see 25% new oak, but we did not buy any barrels in 2021, so they are raised in one-year-old wood. There’s no Charmes of Genevrières as they were an exchange of fruit.” The whites are the main attraction here, but don’t ignore their over-performing Pommard Village.
