I am glad I returned to this domaine in Meursault, as I was rather critical of some of the wines I tasted here last year. The good news is that there is a tangible improvement, I suspect partly because Jean-Michel Gaunoux is allowing his son a freer rein. “There was not too much that was difficult in 2020 except the dryness," he explained. "It was a good vintage, apart from the quantity, with good concentration. We started picking around August 20 and finished after five or six days. There was a month’s difference between 2020 and 2021. We didn’t have to touch the wines, with no acidification. They will be bottled at the beginning of December using natural cork, except for the Bourgogne Blanc." I really adored the Meursault Perrières, one of the finest that I encountered during my visits, while the Goutte d'Or also has much to offer. Perhaps the only weak spot were some of the Volnays, though this was not the only domaine where I felt that that appellation succumbed to the heat wave more than others. I look forward to returning.
