Charles van Canneyt, who began harvesting on September 7, described 2015 as "a very good vintage with structure and acidity and the balance to age well." He noted that 2009 was the only previous very ripe vintage that he has made, and that he was afraid of making hot, heavy wines in 2015. So he carried out "a normal, gentle extraction in an attempt to extract ripe tannins," vinifying his wines with 15% to 20% whole clusters. He told me he may have chaptalized some wines by barely 0.2%, "but just to prolong the fermentations." The malos only finished in September and the wines had not yet been racked when I tasted them in early November. Van Canneyt finds his '15s "more precise than the 2009s at the same stage," although he added that the pHs of around 3.6 were a bit higher than average for the domain.
