I tasted the following wines with Charles Van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot's grandson. Van Canneyt showed me a few 2008s before moving into The 2009s. The estate did some chaptalization in 2008. Based on the selection of wines I tasted, that may have robbed some of The 2008s of their vintage character. Vintage 2009 seems to have played more to the estate's strengths. The estate used 50% new oak for the grand crus and 30% for the 1ers.

Charles van Canneyt, the grandson of Alain Hudelot who is taking over the direction of this domain, told me that he did a bit more extraction in 2009: three punchdowns per day through most of the fermentation. But the estate only does pumpovers during the pre-fermentation cold soak, which lasted a week in 2009. According to van Canneyt, the malos finished quickly in February and March and the wines were racked in April. As in past years, a couple of the lesser wines here were underwhelming in November, but there were also some very pleasant surprises, such as the Chambolle villages and the Vougeot. And the estate's top wines are compellingly sweet and generous without going over the top.
