Usually I partner Ghislaine Barthod with her husband Louis Boillot's wines since their cellars are conjoined, though this year I broached them separately. If you want an idea of how Chambolle-Musigny performed in a growing season then this is the place to come since she compensates for lacking any Grand Crus with parcels, in what seems like, every Premier Cru. "I started the picking in Beaux-Bruns on 26 August and picking the riper Premier Crus first, stopping for a couple of days and then finishing around 7 September. All the wines are de-stemmed. The alcohol levels are between 13% and 13.7%. The second winter is important for the tannins and so we will bottle a little later than the 2017s, in March instead of mid-December." The consistency is always impressive at this domaine and 2018 is no exception. These wines all have wonderful purity and an elegance that allows each terroir to make its own imprint. The only caveats are the small productions, some of them limited to one or two barrels, and that they will be tempting in their youth.
