The 2016 vintage has played nicely into the hands of Florent Viale, whose wines typically exhibit fresh, juicy fruit, seamless texture and discreet tannins. While these 2016s will no doubt reward at least a bit of patience, I also suspect that they will provide plenty of (relatively) early-drinking pleasure for the impatient. The Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Gaby is consistently among the stars of the appellation and is made with roughly a third whole clusters and raised in 600-liter oak barrels, about a third of them new.
