The Maret family founded Domaine de la Charbonnière in 1914. Sisters Veronique (who has been making the wines since 2007) and Caroline Maret assumed control here in 2014. Their parents, Mireille and Michel, are still involved in day-to-day operations. The domaine is made up of almost 28 hectares of vines, 18.5 of which are in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Over the last decade, the wines here have been consistently fine and often outstanding. It’s puzzling to me that they seem to fly under the radar of many followers of the region, at least in the United States. The fruit-driven 2018s and 2017s will drink well on the young side, but I’d give them another five years or so to pick up some savory qualities and shed a little baby fat.
