"I'm a fan of the easy aspect of 2011," said Nicolas Potel in November."The wines are frank and honest, with sexy, supple flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers; a nice combination of richness and stony character; and plenty of ripe tannins. Two thousand eleven is 2000-plus; both vintages offer perfect fruit but the huge difference is that the crop level in 2011 was just 40% of 2000."Potel has been using a lot of CO2 and less SO2 for both his domain and negociant wines, and he believes that this approach had less of a drying influence on the 2011 vintage's fresh fruit. He told me that he harvested his domain parcels beginning on September 1, with potential alcohol in the 12.2% to 13% range, and did not chaptalize.(My tasting notes on the Maison Roche de Bellene wines can be found in the second section of this article.)
