Winemaker Lionel Fraisse told me that because wines from the 2016 vintage in Cornas Saint-Joseph are less full-throttle than the 2015s and 2017s, “people are under the mistaken impression that it’s a light year, and nothing could be further from the truth.” Fraisse pointed out that while many observers compare 2016 to 2012 and 2007, “which is understandable from the view of approachability,” the 2016s have more depth and structure to go along with the forward fruit. “It will be a great vintage to put in the cellar, if you want, but you aren’t obliged.” The wines from this storied producer, who was among the first in the entire northern Rhône to estate-bottle, have never been better for their finesse and balance.

Assistant winemaker Lionel Fraisse and winemaker/g.m. Alberic Mazoyer view 2016 as “a vintage built on classical lines.” Lionel Fraisse notes that “it’s all about clarity, spiciness and focus.” To make that point he pours the 2015 and 2016 bottlings as pairs “to show just how dramatic the difference is between the vintages.” No question, the ‘15s come off as massive beasts next to the far more graceful and energetic 2016 siblings but, “the richness of ’15 when it’s next to ’16 can make you forget that ’16 isn’t a “light” vintage. It will age, just not like ’15.”
