Assistant winemaker Lionel Fraisse told me that while the ripeness of the 2015s is their current calling card, "they also have very good acidity." He thinks that this fact, along with their abundant tannins, "will make them come into really good balance down the road." He pointed out that, unlike other recent hot vintages, the '15s "have more energy to their fruit, and it's the acidity that's making that happen. That wasn't the case with 2009 and 2003," he pointed out.

The past decade has witnessed a dramatic surge in quality at this venerable domaine, which is overseen by long-time winemaker Albéric Mazoyer and his assistant Lionel Fraisse, who comes from a grape-growing family in nearby Saint-Péray. The wines are made entirely from destemmed fruit because, according to Fraisse, “the tannins achieved naturally from Syrah at Cornas, which are well known, are sufficient for the wines’ structure.” No more than 25% new oak comes into play for the Vieilles Vignes and Vieilles Fontaines bottlings and the overall use of virgin barrels here is usually only around 15%. The power and freshness of the Voge 2015s reminded me quite a bit of their excellent, distinctly graceful 2013s crossed with the deeper 2012s, albeit with more weight, ripeness and structure.
