Thierry Sabon opted not to produce a Cuvée du Papet in 2017, joining many of his neighbors in blending the old-vines fruit into his estate’s “basic” bottling because of the short Grenache crop. However, Sabon did make that wine in 2018, and it is excellent. His 2018 is just a step behind the outstanding 2019, which I may have underrated given how it evolved in the open bottle. This domaine is always a reliable source of old-school (in the best sense), elegant, perfumed Châteauneuf-du-Papes that show well young but enjoy long lives based on their balance. In addition to being made in fairly large quantity, the wines deliver some of the best bang for the buck in the appellation. The Sabons own 27 hectares of vines here, with an average age of around 60 years. I have been drinking these wines consistently since the tender age of 19 (the 1978 was one of the first Châteauneuf-du-Papes that I ever tasted, in 1981), and I admittedly have a soft spot for the understated, classic style.
