Clos de la Tech is owned by T.J. Rodgers, who has enjoyed a brilliant career in the semiconductor industry. The estate is composed of several different parcels that are bottled separately. Rodgers favors a heavily extracted, oak-laden style that seems to obscure much of the character of these sites and results in wines that aren't especially representative of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Historically, the Clos de la Tech Pinots have also not aged particularly gracefully, either when considered on their own, or when viewed within the context of what is the norm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Even so, there is no question these sites offer considerable, if latent, potential. The entry-level Santa Cruz Mountains Estates Pinot makes a very strong case that less is more. Maybe a lot more.
