One night, while working in his restaurant, Mark Carter struck up a conversation with a long-standing top customer. That customer turned out to be Fred Schrader. When Carter later got the bug to make wine, Schrader looped him in to some of his top fruit sources. Ever since then, Carter along with his winemaker Mike Smith, has been making some of the most sumptuous, powerful Cabernets in Napa Valley. The Carter Cabernets are quite appealing when they are young, but both the 2001s and 2002s tasted as part of a major vintage retrospective show these wines can age. In addition to the 2012s, I also tasted all the 2013s from barrel, but most of the wines were in need of a racking and were therefore hard to get a read on. These look like to be two very strong vintages from Carter Cellars.
