I was once again quite taken with Mark Carter's wines. Mike Smith crafts these Cabernets in a rich, sumptuous style that offers tons of appeal. Yields were painfully low in 2015. As a result, Carter did not bottle his Cabernet Sauvignon Coliseum Block, but opted to add that fruit into his Hossfeld Red Blend. In 2015, the wines saw 100% new oak, which is higher than normal, but the barrel order had been placed before Carter could possibly have known how short yields would ultimately be. Even so, the vintage appears to have the natural density to handle the new oak just fine. Carter fans will also note the addition of a new wine from Las Piedras. Mark Carter's Cabernets remain some of the most singular wines in Napa Valley.
