Teobaldo Cappellano's 2005 Barolos are fabulous. Readers should expect firm, classically-built wines that will require time and patience to be at their best. Both Barolos play true to type; the Rupestris is the bigger wine, while the Barolo Piè Franco-Michet is more lifted in style. Both are tightly wound, though. I also revisited the 2004s after a less than stellar experience last year. The good news is that the Barolo Piè Rupestris - Nebbiolo is gorgeous, but the bad news is that the Barolo Piè Franco-Michet is at the very least an inconsistent wine. For as long as I can remember, Baldo Cappellano has asked writers not to score his wines, as he viewed scores as potentially divisive among producers. For that reason, these wines are not rated. Cappellano has since passed away, but his son, Augusto, is cut from the very same cloth. Suffice it to say, the only wine I would not be thrilled to own is the 2004 Barolo Piè Franco-Michet. Two recent bottles have both been disappointing relative to the standard that has been set here over the last few decades.
